HOW OUR WORKSHOPS WORK

MEET AND GREET MEAL

The evening before the workshop we arrange a meal for us and attendees to meet. This informal meeting breaks the ice and is always a really fun filled and relaxed event. Attendees are free to ask questions they may not get the chance to on the day, and get to know Shellie, Maddy and Rob a little too.

We encourage all attendees to plan their travel so they can attend. Previous attendees say it really did make a difference on the day itself.

We take care to ensure a calm environment, with no jostling for position. Our workshops are of course, all about photography, so you will have ample opportunity to take images.

The workshop runs from 9.30am - 5pm. There will be three newborn models, as well as maternity, and where possible an older child. We will release details of this aspect per workshop.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THE MORNING?

From the very start we will teach you how to read a baby, how to cater for his needs, how to ensure you communicate effectively with the parents during your relationship with them, and how to ensure that from start to finish, every baby is not only posed well, but is cared for, cared about, and kept safe and comfortable.

While you will be attending to further your newborn photography, the morning focuses on one of the main areas of newborn posing....handling, settling and soothing baby, and getting him to go to sleep, and stay asleep. Posing may seem like the main skill to learn, but if you can't get a baby to stay asleep, you wont be able to pose him. You will learn how to handle a baby confidently and safely, and also how handling correctly plays an important role in settling. Once settled, you will then learn pose flowing to give posing the greatest chance of success. We talk about how to build you posing confidence, how to build your session to minimise disturbing the baby, and how to transition between sets up.

  • Managing parents expectations
  • Soothing and how to get baby to sleep
  • Setting up for sessions, and planning to pose effectively
  • Safe posing and pose flowing and transitioning
  • How to use sleep patterns to obtain the best posing with the deepest sleep

  • Wrapping
  • Safe use of floor and hanging props

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THE AFTERNOON?

This workshop is hosted by the amazing Rob Mank who is an award winning maternity, newborn and child portrait specialist. Rob will be taking a masterclass in the afternoon that will cover pretty much all you need, from maternity, newborn, newborn with parents, right through to older children.(where possible) We will not, however, cover sitters as we feel a busy workshop setting would be too much for a child of this age. Here are some examples of Robs work in these genres

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

All skill levels are welcome, but it is assumed that you will have a basic understanding of manual DSLR settings, including shutter speeds, aperture and ISO settings. Knowledge of Photoshop is preferable.

You will need to bring your own DSLR and lens. All the mentors primarily use a 50mm lens with newborns so that would be our recommendation, however, if you are happy to work with a different lens, that’s fine by us.  For the afternoon Rob recommends a longer lens, and favours his 200mm, but do just bring what you can. Please remember extra memory cards and batteries.

Lunch is provided
